Teaching Plan

Text book: New Horizon College English, book 1 Content: Unit 4, section B, Body language Objectives:

1. To enable students to understand the relationship between body language and snap judgment;

2. To learn three new words and expressions “ the minute---”,” statement” and “snap judgment”. Procedures: I. Lead-in

1. Play a film clip from Forrest Gump and ask Ss to describe the children on the bus.

Tell the Ss that they are making snap judgments, and ask them to find out the definition of snap judgment from the text. 2. Ask Ss to discuss the topic of snap judgments. 3. Ask Ss to go through the text and find out the answers.

II. Illustrate the four forms of body language and introduce the new words in

the text

1. We communicate a great deal by body movements. New words: excited, resentful---

2. Clothing also communicates many things.

New words: social status, state of mind, aspirations, dreams, promote---

3. People announce a variety of things about themselves by the means of ornaments. New words: badge, membership, religious token, belief, diamond, economic status---

4. Choices in architecture and furniture reflect a person’s life-style. New word: life-style.

III. Main idea and structure of the text

1) (p1-4)Some people say ‘snap judgments’ are not sound and overestimate the importance of speech.

IV. Detailed study for Paragraph 1 1. I liked him the minute I saw him.

I liked him the minute as soon as I saw him. Similar patterns: the moment/the instant/the second--- Examples:

Telephone me the minute he arrives. Please tell me the instant you get the results.

2. statement: something that one says or writes, often officially说话叙述,声明 Examples:

issue/make a statement:发表声明 confirm a statement:证实一项陈述 Word-formation: ment(V.-N.)

3. snap: done quickly and suddenly, often without careful thought 迅速的,突然的 Examples:

Make a snap decision/take a snap vote/a snap election V . Conclusion
